UNITED WAY OF INDIAN RIVER COUNTY | FOR ALICE FAMILES PRESS RELEASE

For ALICE families, life is becoming unaffordable

Dear Community Champion,

As the holidays approach, many of us look forward to gathering with loved ones, sharing meals, and celebrating the season. But for too many of our neighbors, especially ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) families, these moments are overshadowed by a growing reality: life has simply become unaffordable.

Rising housing costs, higher grocery bills, and everyday expenses that climb faster than paychecks are pushing hardworking families to the brink. For many, stability feels out of reach - and the holiday season only magnifies the struggle.

Yet in the midst of these challenges, you continue to shine a light of hope.

Because of your support this past year:

  • 31,548 residents gained access to low-cost, nutritious food
  • 4,855 receive essential dental care
  • 590 children enrolled in quality early-learning programs
  • 1,278 youth found safety, consistency, and enrichment in after-school programs
  • 183 veterans had their basic needs met
  • 108 individuals received job training
  • 1,752 neighbors turned to the Multi-Agency Resource Center for help - including 728 families who received housing and utility assistance after Hurricane Milton

These aren't just numbers. They're parents who can put food on the table, children who are learning and thriving, veterans who feel supported, and families who stayed housed after a devastating storm. You made this possible.

As we enter this season of gratitude, we invite you to continue standing with those who need us most. Your generosity ensures families aren't forced to choose between groceries and rent. It brings stability, dignity, and hope to neighbors working hard to make ends meet.

When you give to United Way, you're doing more than helping - you're changing the future for thousands right here in Indian River County.

From all of us at United Way of Indian River County, thank you for your compassion, your commitment, and your belief in building a community where everyone can thrive. We wish you a warm, meaningful Thanksgiving filled with connection and gratitude.

With appreciation,

Meredith Egan

Chief Executive Officer
