MARINE RESOURCES COUNCIL | NOVEMBER LAGOON AT NOON

Dr. Laura Wilson

Marine Resources Council

Tuesday, November 3, 2026, 12:00 PM

Join us at the Ted Moorhead Lagoon House for November's Lagoon at Noon with Dr. Laura Wilson, to learn about prehistoric seabirds! Seabirds are considered indicators of ecological hotspots because where they forage and nest is so closely tied to oceanographic factors. Pursuit diving seabirds - those that actively pursue prey underwater- are even more closely tied to oceanographic factors, as diving ability is often gained at the expense of flight capabilities. Join us to explore what seabird fossils can tell us about the chemical, physical, and biological properties of an inland sea that stretched across central North America 80 million years ago.

The seminar will end with a live Q&A session. Given the limited seating in the Lagoon House and an increased demand for in-person tickets, there is a $5 in-person attendance fee. Please feel free to bring your own lunch. Coffee and cookies will be provided. Viewing Lagoon at Noon presentations via Zoom remains free. We thank you for your continued support of our Lagoon at Noon Program.

The Zoom link will be in your confirmation email. A recording of the presentation will be posted to MRC's YouTube page for future viewing.

About the Speaker

Dr. Laura Wilson

Inspired by the natural world, Laura pursues work that brings together her love of learning, teaching, and exploring. She earned her B.S. in Geology from Washington & Lee University, M.S. in Earth Sciences from Montana State University, and Ph.D. in Geological Sciences from University of Colorado at Boulder. Her background is in vertebrate paleontology, specifically studying ancient marine ecosystems that evolved in a greenhouse climate and comparing them to modern systems. After 12 years in academia, Laura realized she wanted to make a bigger impact on Earth’s future. She started as the Executive Director of MRC in June 2024 where she brings a holistic and interdisciplinary approach to ecosystem restoration. Through this, she emphasizes data-informed decision-making, collaborative partnerships, and a commitment to lifelong learning. When not working, Laura enjoys exploring new places, activities, and foods with her family, cheering for her favorite sports teams, and gardening.

Homeschool Lagoon Explorers

November 4 - Who lives in the water?

Lagoon Explorers is geared towards grades 1 - 6 and is an opportunity for aspiring scientists to dive deeper into the natural world, the process of scientific inquiry, and what makes Florida’s environments so special. Each month, the Lagoon Explorers will examine a new subject, ranging from water quality to ecology to marine biology.

Each program caps at 17 total students. Reserve your spot as soon as possible to guarantee attendance!

The two-hour lesson will feature an introduction, an outdoor observational opportunity (weather permitting), hands-on laboratory exploration, and a discussion. Students will investigate the three species of mangrove trees found in Florida and have the opportunity to plant propagules with the Science team! Interested students can register at the link below or reach out to Brooke Blosser (brooke@mrcirl.org) for more information!
