Join us at the Ted Moorhead Lagoon House for August's Lagoon at Noon with Florida Oceanographic Society's Research Technician, Nick Curto! This presentation will highlight how seagrass nurseries work. Especially the Florida oceanographic societies and the important conservation and research work that is being done there. The goal is for the audience to hopefully gain an understanding and respect for nurseries as a whole.
The seminar will end with a live Q&A session. Given the limited seating in the Lagoon House and an increased demand for in-person tickets, there is a $5 in-person attendance fee. Please feel free to bring your own lunch. Coffee and cookies will be provided. Viewing Lagoon at Noon presentations via Zoom remains free. About the Speaker
Nick Curto, M.S.
Nick is a marine biologist and conservationist, a born and raised Floridian from his hometown of Stuart. He got his undergraduate degree from USF in environmental science and his master's from Unity College in Marine science. He worked several years at Loggerhead Marine Life Center, doing everything from nesting surveys to releases before coming to FOS. He is currently the nursery manager, overseeing the growth of multiple seagrass and mangrove species and running an oyster monitoring program.
Lagoon Explorers
August Theme: Mighty Mangroves!

Lagoon Explorers is geared towards grades 1 - 6 and is an opportunity for aspiring scientists to dive deeper into the natural world, the process of scientific inquiry, and what makes Florida’s environments so special. Each month, the Lagoon Explorers will examine a new subject, ranging from water quality to ecology to marine biology.
The two-hour lesson will feature an introduction, an outdoor observational opportunity (weather permitting), hands-on laboratory exploration, and a discussion. Students will investigate the three species of mangrove trees found in Florida and have the opportunity to plant propagules with the Science team!
