Meteorologist Scott Spratt from the National Weather Service will discuss hurricane formation, the local hurricane history, hazards and impacts, the seasonal outlook and where to find NWS information to help with personal and business hurricane planning and preparedness.
Spratt holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Meteorology from the University of Lowell (Massachusetts) and a Master of Science Degree in Meteorology from the University of Hawaii.
Spratt has been a meteorologist with the National Weather Service for nearly 30 years. He began his NWS career in Jackson, Mississippi then transferred to the Melbourne, Florida Forecast Office in 1993. In his role as Warning Coordination Meteorologist, Spratt is in charge of forecast and warning services for east-central Florida and is the primary liaison between the NWS and all partners and customers served by the Melbourne office.
He has earned several recognitions throughout his career including two U.S. Department of Commerce Gold Medals for providing life-saving forecasts and warnings prior to and during historic tornado and hurricane events and received the Florida Governor’s Hurricane Conference Tropical Meteorology Award in 2016. He has published over 50 technical papers and has adapted research results to improve severe weather warning techniques.
Spratt provides over 100 presentations each year regarding hazardous weather impacts and safety to the public, civic groups, schools and businesses. He also provides impact weather training to emergency managers and public safety organizations and assists with exercise planning.
